Why Use Underlined Text?
A line beneath a short label can add emphasis when a text field offers few formatting controls. Compare the single and double line to find the result that stays readable after pasting.
- Include the line in the copied text
- Combining underline marks travel with eligible letters and numbers. You do not need to carry over this page’s CSS formatting.
- Compare one line with two
- Single Underline gives a lighter effect. Double Underline can look more pronounced, but needs enough room below the text to remain clear.
- See your own words instantly
- Compare the live results as you type. You can move between categories without retyping your text or changing your preview size.
- Free to try, private to use
- Preview and copy without an account. Conversion runs in your browser, with a draft kept in this tab when browser storage is available so you can return to your text.
How It Works
Enter your text
Type a name, label or short message, up to 500 characters. Joined emoji count together. Use Clear to start over or Try an example for a starting phrase.
Choose your style
Compare Single Underline and Double Underline. Check letters with descenders, such as g and y, for crowded or uneven lines. The size slider changes this preview only; it does not set the size of pasted text.
Copy and paste
Select Copy beside the result you want. Paste with Ctrl+V, Cmd+V or your phone’s Paste action, then check the result in the destination. If Copy is unavailable, select the complete result and copy manually.
Popular Use Cases
- Short heading accents
- Underline a brief heading in a casual post. Use normal characters for the body so the extra marks do not distract from the message.
- Personal note labels
- Try a short label above an informal note. If the app has an underline toolbar, its native formatting may give a more consistent result.
- Comparing visual emphasis
- Look at the same word with a single and double line before choosing an accent. An underline alone does not turn the text into a clickable link.
Styles & character coverage
Underlines that travel with your letters
The underline generator attaches a single or double low line to eligible letters and numbers. These marks travel with copied text, but their positioning and spacing are controlled by the destination's fonts.
- Single Underline
- Adds a single combining low line to each plain letter or number. The line is copied with the letter; it does not turn the text into a clickable link.
- Double Underline
- Uses a double low line. Both presets leave spaces, emoji and letters with existing added marks unchanged, so the line may have gaps.
Choose the lighter single line for a short label, or compare the double line for emphasis. Use ordinary underline formatting when you need a predictable document layout.
Character coverage
- Single Underline
- Adds a combining mark to plain letters and numbers; whitespace, emoji and already marked characters stay unchanged. Preserve case.
- Double Underline
- Adds a combining mark to plain letters and numbers; whitespace, emoji and already marked characters stay unchanged. Preserve case.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the underline move after pasting?
Combining-mark positioning varies between fonts. The copied characters can be identical while the line's height, thickness or gaps change.
Can I underline a whole emoji sequence?
This preset keeps emoji intact and does not attach underlines to them. It also avoids adding marks to characters that already contain combining marks.
Is underlined output a link?
No. The result is plain Unicode text without a destination URL. An underline does not give the text link behavior.
Why does the underline look broken or clipped after pasting?
The destination controls line height, character spacing and combining-mark placement. A separate mark follows each eligible character, so the line may not be continuous. Try Single Underline, shorten the phrase or use the app’s native underline formatting.
Is this free, and is my text uploaded?
Generating and copying text is free, with no sign-up. Input is limited to 500 characters and converted in your browser. When storage is available, this tab keeps a draft of your text and preview size; neither is sent to a server. Clear removes the draft text. The separate font-creation tools follow their own plans and workflow.
How can I create a font from my own lettering?
For original letterforms, upload an image of your handwriting or drawn letters on the homepage. Creating a custom font is a separate workflow; copying an underline does not create a font file or a hyperlink. Choose Create your font to open the homepage upload area. It accepts a PNG, JPG or WebP image; review the letters in the main font-creation workflow.
Create your own font
Turn your handwriting or a letter image into your own font.
Ready to design original letters? MakeFont’s AI font generator starts with your image. Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP on the homepage and review your letters in the font-creation workspace. Creating an installable font is a separate workflow with its own plans; the Unicode effects on this page remain free to copy.
